Pupil Premium in English KS3 & KS4

In line with the school's Pupil Premium policy that: 'Pupil Premium will be used to provide additional educational support to improve the progress and to raise the standard of achievement of pupils' the English department will be focusing on raising the standards of literacy through the development of reading skills. Each term will focus on a different year group from years 7-11. With the main objective being to provide support and assistance to your child in allowing them to develop their reading skills to ensure they are ready for their GCSE examinations in both English Language and Literature. Furthermore, students will be looking at both fiction and non-fiction texts to demonstrate that skills can be transferred across both subject areas.

Weeks 1 & 2 Understanding a text through retrieval of information in both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Weeks 3 & 4 Developing inference and deduction skills in both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Weeks 5 & 6 Support inference skills with textual evidence in both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Weeks 7 & 8 Commenting on the effectiveness of language in both fiction and non-fiction texts.

Pupil Premium Assessment.

During the period of intervention, your child will complete three reading assessments. The first assessment will enable staff member to gain an understanding of your child's reading ability and will then assist them in catering to their specific needs to during the 6- 8 week period of intervention. Two other assessments completed during this time will be completed to track the progress of your child and measure their success during this period. In addition, your child's performance will also be shared with their class teacher ensuring there is a collaborative effort in ensuring your child has the tools to be a success in English at KS3 and KS4.
