In the Department of Modern Foreign Languages we believe that learning a language is an invaluable asset to all our students. Beyond achieving a qualification, the ability to speak another language offers transferable skills in the world or work, the enjoyment of interacting with locals on holiday and a deeper understanding of different cultures.
Our students are encouraged to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, co-operating with others, thus improving their social skills. Learning a language is not easy, but with patience and persistence, our students are challenged to meet the grades required for success at GCSE. Spanish is the chosen language as it is the second most widely spoken language in the world, and Spain a popular tourist destination. We are very fortunate to have a native speaker who comes into school each week and assists students with pronunciation, as well as shining a light on Spanish culture and traditions.
Jack Spencer, a past pupil who is currently studying Spanish at Chester University, also helps pupils with their speaking skills on a one to one basis. We are also fortunate to have Mrs Almonte, a Spanish speaking teaching assistant who plays an invaluable role in the department.
Each MFL room has an interactive whiteboard where pupils are given the opportunity to develop their language skills. We also use digital voice recorders and digital cameras so that pupils can perfect their Spanish speaking skill.
