Great Wirral Bake Off

  • 10th February 2017

During 'Visitor Economy' week there have been a range of activities taking place at colleges throughout Merseyside, involving school children, students, teachers, parents and employers.

One of the events which took place was a 'Bake off' with students across Wirral taking place.

Three year 9 students from Bebington High Sports College were chosen as finalists to represent the school on Wednesday 8th February. Tom Mort, Josh Hall & Ruben Pitt all created cakes that would represent and promote the Wirral Peninsula.

The Final was held at Wirral Metropolitan College and Tom was chosen as the overall winner from all the other schools taking part.

Tom's winning cake was called 'The Seven Wonders of Wirral' and showcased many of the attractions that Wirral has to offer including; parks & gardens, football, wildlife and music.

The cake Tom created was a three tier Victoria Sandwich, filled with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream. The top of the cake was made from fondant icing which was then sectioned into seven equal pieces, each one representing each ' Wonder'.

The judges were, General Manager of Mere Brook House, Lorna Tyson, and Ada Williams, Chef & Lecturer at Wirral Metropolitan College, who decided that the attention to detail Tom has put into his winning design was brilliant and he was able to speak very confidently about baking and also the rationale behind its creation.

Well done boys!
